Fully Restored & Customized Antique Foster Brothers Hogsplitter, handforged in Fulton, NY circa 1920s. Razor sharp & work ready.
A few years back I drove out to Ohio to meet an old timer who had acquired the last hogsplitter blades ever made in the Foster Bros factory located in Fulton, NY. Foster Bros began manufacturing butcher tools soon after the Civil War and closed the doors to their factory in the 1950s. This gentleman cleaned out the last of the inventory from the abandoned factory in the late 1960s and they have been collecting dust in a dark corner of his garage for the past 50+ years. I was able to purchase every piece he had and drove home with two dozen hogsplitter blades in my truck — all unfinished handforged blades without handles. It’s been a slow restoration process, but well worth the time & effort.
Here’s the end product: the 100-year-old blade features most of the original dark patina still intact & a fully rebeveled shaving sharp convex edge. Finished with a beautiful custom Zebrawood & Wenge handle, lathed-turned by my friend Zac from Friedberg Fabrication. Proud of this one! SPECS: 12” blade w/ 1/2” thick spine, 33” OAL, weighs 7.5lbs.
